Critical Care

PURPOSE

In the aftermath of critical illness, post-ICU patients have similar needs to those of patients with critical injuries, with persisting physical, cognitive, emotional and psychosocial problems, but they are less likely to receive follow-up rehabilitation. The evidence of persisting morbidities in ICU survivors has prompted the initiation of rehabilitation inside more ICUs after stabilization of critical illness. The purpose of the Rehabilitation Psychologists in Critical Care Special Interest Group is to provide a forum for the increasing number of psychologists who provide services in all kinds of intensive care units as well as those who have interest in addressing the specific needs of post-ICU patients in hospital and community settings.  Since most psychologists working in the ICU practice in relative isolation, the opportunity to discuss the unique challenges is particularly helpful for them. The Critical Care Psychology Special Interest Group was established in 2015, following the enthusiastic response to a day-long workshop at the midyear conference.

GOALS

  • Serve as a platform to share information and discuss new literature. A group email has been established and a quarterly update of recent publications in ICU research is disseminated.

  • Facilitate consultation and support for psychologists who work in intensive care.

  • Promote the prevention and treatment of the long-term effects of ICU survivorship and contribute to policy making in this area.

  • Facilitate collaborative research and its dissemination.
