Awards for contributions to the field of Rehabilitation Psychology are sponsored by Division 22 and its partner organizations. Follow the links for each reward category for additional details including nomination submission instructions and lists of past recipients.

Division 22 Achievement Awards

Division 22 sponsors the following awards, whose recipients are determined by the the Awards Committee. The Division 22 President, President-Elect, and Immediate Past President also participate in the awards selection process.

MID-WINTER CONFERENCE AWARDS

Lifetime Achievement Award

Division 22’s Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes rehabilitation psychologists who have made outstanding lifelong contributions in their lifetime of work in the areas of practice, science, public interest, and/or education and training that advances Rehabilitation Psychology as a science or a profession.

Lifetime Practice Excellence Award 

This Lifetime Practice Award conferred by Division 22 is bestowed upon an individual who has made distinguished lifelong contributions to Rehabilitation Psychology through excellence in the clinical practice of Rehabilitation Psychology, in training others for clinical practice, and/or in setting clinical practice policy.

Roger G. Barker Distinguished Research Contribution Award

The Roger C. Barker Distinguished Research Contribution Award is conferred upon an individual who is judged to have made an outstanding lifelong contribution to rehabilitation psychology through empirical research, conceptual/theoretical development or both.

Division 22 Mentoring Award

The Division 22 Mentoring Award is given to honor a rehabilitation psychologist who has displayed excellence in mentoring clinical, counseling, or Rehabilitation Psychology graduate students, interns, post-doctoral fellows, or junior faculty. This award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated excellence in their professional generosity, supporting, encouraging, and promoting professional and personal growth, and education, training, and leadership in Rehabilitation Psychology.

APA Citizen Psychologist Award for Advancing Disability as a Human Rights and Social Justice Issue

Division 22 is one of 14 APA divisions and state, provincial, and territorial psychological associations (SPTAs) that have been awarded a grant to develop a recognition program for Citizen Psychologists. Our Division’s award, APA Citizen Psychologist Award for Advancing Disability as a Human Rights and Social Justice Issue, will be given annually at our mid-winter meeting. Barry Nierenberg Lifetime Education Award

This award is conferred upon an individual who devotes a large and significant portion of their effort to education regarding rehabilitation psychology and the foundational principles, and can include those who teach undergraduates/graduates, run and/or are a part of a rehabilitation psychology training program, and take part in educating other health care professionals.

Business of rehabilitation psychology practice award

This award is conferred upon an individual who has made contributions to the business of Rehabilitation Psychology through either:

[1] Advocacy regarding the business of rehabilitation psychology; or
[2] Publication, list serve/web based, conference participation regarding the business of rehabilitation psychology; or
[3] Consultation/advising with psychologists on the business of rehabilitation psychology; and/or
[4] Teaching the business of rehabilitation psychology.

The business of Rehabilitation Psychology includes psychologist role issues in rehabilitation program development, rehabilitation psychologist roles in facilities, the financial aspects of rehabilitation psychology service development, billing/collection/payor issues, rehabilitation psychologist job descriptions, rehabilitation psychology private practice development, rehabilitation employment negotiations/contracts, etc.


APA ANNUAL CONVENTION AWARDS

MITCH ROSENTHAL EARLY CAreer RESEARCH AWARD

The Rosenthal Award is given to persons who, while still in the first 10 years since being awarded their doctorate, have made a significant contribution to research in the field of rehabilitation psychology.

Early Career Practice Award

This annual award is given to persons who, while still in the first ten years since being awarded their doctorate, are seen as a model for practice in Rehabilitation Psychology.

Harold Yuker Award for Research Excellence

This annual award is given to the first author of the most highly rated paper published in the journal, Rehabilitation Psychology, during the previous year. 

Larry Stewart Award (SIG on Deafness)

This award is presented biennially to an individual who exemplifies the ideals and values of Dr. Larry G. Stewart through professional contributions to research, theory, or practice which demonstrate consistency with Dr. Stewart’s conviction that all people share a common psychology and humanity, whether they are hearing, hard of hearing, or deaf.


Distinguished Lecturer Awards

Individuals who make significant contributions to the field of Rehabilitation Psychology are invited to lecture at the annual mid-winter conference.

LEONARD DILLER LECTURE

The Leonard Diller Lecturer is a rehabilitation psychologist who has made significant scholarly contributions and achievements in neurorehabilitation.

Beatrice Wright and Tamara Dembo Lecture On Psychosocial Aspects of Rehabilitation

The Dembo-Wright Award Lecture was founded in 2003 by the David and Minnie Meyerson Foundation to honor Dr. Tamara Dembo’s and Dr. Beatrice Wright’s landmark contributions to the psychosocial aspects of rehabilitation psychology. The Dembo-Wright lecture is presented annually at the mid-year Rehabilitation Psychology conference. The honorarium is funded by an annual grant from the Meyerson Foundation.


Foundation for Rehabilitation Psychology Student Awards

The Foundation for Rehabilitation Psychology (FRP) sponsors awards recognizing student research at the annual mid-winter meeting and other venues. 

Foundation for Rehabilitation Psychology Dissertation Award

The Foundation for Rehabilitation Psychology sponsors a competition for dissertation research funding. The purpose of the FRP Dissertation Award is to assist doctoral students in Psychology with research costs to promote research in the field of Rehabilitation Psychology.

Foundation for Rehabilitation Psychology Student Presentation Award

The Foundation provides yearly awards for student presentations at the annual mid-winter meeting and/or other venues. The number of awards and amounts vary but are typically for the best poster and best oral presentation. Information about awards and procedures for applying for them are described in the annual invitation pages for the mid-winter meeting.
